Kicks participants celebrate Black History Month

Posted on 24 October 2017  - 12:24

Participants from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Premier League Kicks programme have been taking part in a series of workshops throughout October to mark Black History Month.

The sessions use football as a platform to educate and inspire local young people about the history of African culture while promoting skills such as creative writing, delivering presentations, and helping to build self-esteem.

One element of the programme looked at the history of iconic black figures, including Walter Tull, who was the country’s first black Army Officer and outfield professional footballer to play in England’s top division.

Tull (pictured, below) made 10 appearances for the Club between 1909 and 1911, going on to make over 100 appearances for Northampton Town before being killed in action during World War One.

With support and guidance from the Foundation, the young people, aged 14-16, will be tasked with producing their own piece of creative writing using the knowledge gained from the workshops.

Richard Allicock, Community Development Manager, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said: “The workshops have been well-received by our Kicks participants and clearly demonstrate just how powerful football can be in engaging local young people in education.

“We hope that the topics covered during Black History Month will not only increase the young people’s knowledge, but also help them to develop key communication skills for use in both education and future work.”

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Kicks programme delivers free football sessions for 12- to 19-year-olds, using football to break down barriers between young people and support them on to positive pathways away from crime and anti-social behaviour.
