Our players will touch down in Melbourne this weekend ahead of the International Champions Cup – and Kevin Wimmer for one can’t wait for our double-header against Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

The popular defender this week put pen to paper on a new contract with the Club following a fine first year in our colours, in which he made 21 appearances in all competitions.

Now, as we gear up for the 2016-17 campaign, we’re off Down Under for our first two mainstream matches of the pre-season period, with Italian giants Juve first up on Tuesday (July 26) before a clash with Champions League finalists Atletico three days later.

Austrian international Kevin has never been to Australia before and, as such, he’s thrilled to be heading to that part of the world as we move to the next level in our preparations for the new term.

“It’s my first time in Australia and it’s going to be great!” beamed the 23-year-old, who previously played for 1. FC Köln in Germany.

“The games and training sessions will be tough as you’d expect but Melbourne is a very nice place and hopefully we will also get some time off to see a little bit of the city.

“On the pitch, I think they’ll be very good tests for us against Juventus and Atletico – they’re very big teams and I think they’re the right opponents for us.

“We need to get ready for the season because the Premier League and Champions League will be very tough this year and I hope it’s going to be a very good trip for all of us.”

Both matches take place at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground and Kevin believes the chance to play such illustrious opponents on such a big stage will serve as ideal preparation for our European nights at Wembley during the coming season.

“It’s amazing to play in a big stadium like this so we can get prepared for Wembley when we play Champions League football,” he added. “I think everything is set up very well with the two games.”
