A regular starter for us following Jan Vertonghen’s injury against Crystal Palace in January, the centre-half has picked up plenty of game time in various competitions over the last couple of months.
With his nation preparing to host Albania today as the build-up to Euro 2016 continues, Kevin is hopeful that his performances at club level will stand him in good stead as he seeks to add to his two senior international caps to date.
“It’s a very good time for me now that I’ve played so many games,” said the enthusiastic 23-year-old, who has been an unused substitute for most of Austria’s recent matches.
“We’ve had a game pretty much every three days, I always try to improve myself and to show my best in those matches and it’s always important for the national team that you play at your club and produce good games.
“I think I have done a lot recently and hopefully showed the national coach that, at the moment, I am enjoying some good performances. Of course, it’s just friendly matches for us now but if I get the chance to play I will try, like I do for Tottenham, to show my best.”
In spite of his good form, Kevin knows there’s still fierce competition for places in the Austrian defence. Among those regularly featuring for his country is Leicester City’s Christian Fuchs, who operates at left-back and captains the side.
“We have a very good team, most of our players are playing in the German Bundesliga and even four or five now play in the Premier League,” Kevin explained.
“Of course, Christian Fuchs is a very important player for our national team – he’s the captain and he’s a leader in the group. Obviously he’s doing well with Leicester, we’re going into the final stage of the season and they are still on top of the table but of course we will keep trying to put pressure on them by also winning our games.
“With the national side, though, in the last few years the development of the Austrian football team has been incredible. We had a very good qualification campaign for the Euros and I think we also have a good chance to win the two friendly matches this week against Albania and Turkey.”
Kick-off against Albania is at 4.30pm UK time today.
