Gus Poyet reckons keeping a clean sheet is the key to success against Manchester City at the Lane on Sunday.City are flying high in fifth place in the Barclays Premier League with their success centred around their home form at Eastlands – eight out of eight wins so far.

Away form hasn’t been as impressive with the only win on their travels at West Ham on the first day of the season.

First team coach Gus is determined to bounce back from last Sunday’s home loss to Birmingham City with the lads boosted by qualification into the last 32 of the UEFA Cup with a draw against Anderlecht on Thursday.

“It’s important to bounce back and we have to,” declared Gus. “The key is to get a clean sheet and if we’re strong enough to keep a clean sheet, with the quality we have going forward, it’s only one way for us and that’s winning games.”

Gus described City as the season’s surprise package. “It’s a good surprise in terms of where they are, how strong they are and the football they are playing.

“They have very good players and I know they will have a few missing but we’ll need to be at a good level to win this game.

“We need to get the three points, that’s for sure, the lads will put the effort in and hopefully we’ll defend better as a team. It could be a great afternoon of football at White Hart Lane.”
