KEEPERS WEEK

Hans Segers continues his review of our goalkeepers' season with a look at the younger keepers at the club.

Coach Hans had five goalkeepers under his charge last term - Paul Robinson, Radek Cerny, Ben Alnwick, Robert Burch and Tommy Forecast - with Robbo again ever-present in the Premiership and Radek playing on five occasions.

'Burchy' recovered from a broken leg on the final day of the 2005-06 season to play three times for our reserves and make his league debut on loan at Barnet. He has since been released to further his career elsewhere.

Meanwhile, although Tommy made just two appearances, his improvement and application impressed his coach.

Robert Burch (3 reserve appearances, 6 appearances on loan to Barnet)

Hans Segers: "When Burchy broke his leg I told him that football is about ups and downs and you’ll have more downs than ups. I knew he would come back mentally stronger and he also came back physically stronger, so for something bad, something good came out of it.

"He went on loan, played a few times and he had that good season in 2003-04 when Glenn Hoddle was manager when he was on the bench for almost half of the season, so he takes that experience with him. He’s nearly 100 per cent fit again and wherever he goes, I’m sure he will make a success of it."

Tommy Forecast (2 reserve appearances)

Hans Segers: "For me, Tommy was one of the surprises of the season. He always had good agility but technically and mentally he wasn't the strongest, but I’ve seen such a big improvement in all aspects of his goalkeeping. I must say, I’m delighted with his progress. He’s proved a lot of people wrong and perhaps even proved me wrong."
