Robbie Keane is hoping for a case of onwards and upwards when the new season gets underway.

The playing fields of Europe now await as a reward for last season's fifth place finish and Robbie is eager to do well in the UEFA Cup as well as recording an improvement on the domestic front where, despite final day disappointments, the Republic of Ireland international captain feels the team developed well over the course of last term.

"We should be happy and we would have taken it before the season started," said the striker. We now want to do well in the UEFA Cup.

"The main thing is to improve each season. We did it last time and we'll be looking to do it again next season.

"We must continue to progress and if we keep doing the same things we have been doing we'll be alright."

Season 2005-06 was a memorable one on a personal level for Robbie, a campaign where many observers believe he produced the best football of his career in registering 16 goals in 25 Premiership starts.

"I've been fortunate enough in that the season went really well for me. It is good when the team is doing well because it makes your job a little bit easier.

"The thing I try to do each season is better what I have done in previous years. If I can continue to do that then hopefully I will have a good season again."
