Robbie is excited by the prospect of the England under-21 international bolstering the striking ranks at the club and points out that Jermain has achieved much so far in short time.
"Jermain is a fantastic young player - only 21 - and I think people forget that," considered Robbie. "He's done a lot in a short career.
"He is someone that reminds you of a player like Ian Wright, always poaching and will always get goals for you."
Robbie agrees that the fleet-footed Defoe is more predatory than himself, preferring to lurk in areas where he can hurt teams rather than drop off the front, like himself, and link up play.
"Jermain is probably more like an out and out striker, if you like, he plays right up there whereas I like to come off and get more involved in the game by coming deep.
"Jermain likes to poach around the box but, in saying that, he can come off and has good feet - he is an intelligent player."
"I think it signals good times ahead for Tottenham," he predicted, adding that the signing is something of a coup for the club.
"It certainly is, you've seen the publicity he's had and a lot of clubs seemed to want him. Whether that is true or not, to be linked with those clubs you have to be a decent player.
"Jermain is a great player and I'm sure he will do well for Tottenham."
