Our director of football and current caretaker manager revealed that he had spoken to Saints' chairman Rupert Lowe on Monday.
We have been constantly linked with Moroccan midfielder Kachloul this season and speculation was rife at the weekend that we were also lining up a bid for team-mate Dean Richards.
David said: "I have spoken to the Southampton chairman today (Monday).
"The day before George (Graham) left we spoke to Southampton about Hassan Kachloul. He was on George’s list, supported by me. It now depends if Southampton want a dialogue, but this looks unlikely."
As for Richards, David insisted that we had not made an offer for the defender at any stage
He added: "We had discussed Dean Richards as well but never made an offer and we have since been led to believe he has signed an extension to his contract there.
"We didn’t make an offer for him, although he’s done very well and indeed Richards and Richard Rufus were the two centre-backs I took to Italy in 1995 when I looked after the Endsleigh League team over there and they both looked good young players."
Meanwhile, to complete the latest round of rumoured transfer targets, David poured cold water on a link with Paris St Germain's Sylvain Distin. He said: "It was reported that we had made a £7m bid for him but this is not correct."
David Pleat insists the chances of talking to Southampton about Hassan Kachloul moving to the Lane are 'unlikely'.
