Roman Pavlyuchenko played down his thunderous free-kick winner against Rubin Kazan by stating: “I just did my job.”
The striker pulled the trigger to great effect in the 33rd minute, rifling home a free-kick from 20 yards after Danny Rose had been upended on the edge of the box.
That was enough to beat an impressive Rubin Kazan side and see us top of Group A, halfway through the group stage of the competition.
“It’s my job to score. I didn’t do anything extraordinary, I just did my job,” said Pav after his second goal in Europe this term.
“There was no plan. I just hit the ball hard and hoped it went in.
“It was a great goal but all goals are beautiful, you remember them all. I scored a goal and in general, the victory was excellent.
“I like Rubin, they’re a good team, very dangerous.
“I don’t think the group stage is finished, we need more points yet and our aim is to progress as far as possible.”
