July 16: Hard work was worth it

Posted on 16 July 2002  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

It has been hard work but I'm back at the training ground and working with the team again.

I can do everything now but when we start to do the more physical work I will not be able to do that yet. I can do the ball work, have the warm-up, shoot, run at 100 per cent but the strong, one-on-one situation is not possible yet.

At the moment I will I have to stop when we start to play games, if not I will go straight to the next injury. Once you start, you can't stop.

I think the worst time has gone now though because I can jog, do ball work and I look forward to my first game at White Hart Lane.

Rehabilitation has been hard in Germany but I always had a focus - to be back here at pre-season training and doing everything will the team.

It was short time but I tried to do that, now it takes maybe about one month longer but I am happy because I can do everything, the knee is not swollen and I've had no reaction.

People ask if it has been easier this time than when I had the same injury on my left knee.

Well, in the beginning it was easier because I knew I had to come down, I knew I would lose muscle and it takes time. When I start to bring the muscle back I looked and I'd lost five centimetres in the thigh. You have to work so long to get that muscle back. I forgot that! My muscle was so soft and so small, it looked like my grandma's thigh! I was shocked.

Two weeks ago my doctor told me that I could do everything, ball work, runs and start to build my power. That was the best news for me. I worked hard to have that report.

Now I need more hard sessions to make sure I can really start with the team. I can do everything now apart from games and that's what I'm building to now.

I have to say thank-you to the club, to Glenn and the management staff because everyone is behind me and said 'Steffen, you have the experience, you go that way' and it is wonderful to have that backing and trust.
