Juande Ramos felt we thoroughly deserved our Carling Cup victory at Newcastle on Wednesday night.
The defence of the trophy started impressively as Roman Pavlyuchenko's first goal in a Spurs shirt after 62 minutes was quickly followed by Jamie O'Hara's smart finish for a 2-0 lead at St James' Park.
Solid defensively throughout, those goals were always going to be enough - Michael Owen made it 2-1 in the final minute but there were no further scares.
"We deserved the win," stated Head Coach Juande. "The first half was more equal and the two teams were at a similar level but we took the advantage in the second half.
"We scored the two goals and even though Michael Owen scored right at the end, I don't think you can argue with the overall result.
"You know you need to win in the Carling Cup otherwise you are out of the competition and the players looked fit and had the confidence to win. The scoreline was good for us."
Juande was asked if the result - our first domestic win of the campaign - could change the season. "You never know what is around the corner," he replied cautiously. "The result does give us peace of mind but we'll have to see what happens in our next game at Portsmouth on Sunday.
"Portsmouth are strong at home, so it will be a test."
