Juande Ramos insisted the tie wasn't over - but knows we have to improve to have any chance of progressing into the last eight of the UEFA Cup after Thursday night's 1-0 home loss in the first leg against PSV.
The Dutch side produced a classic away European performance to take an advantage back to the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven next Wednesday, March 12.
A packed midfield strangled our offensive play in the first half and while we had to wait until the 37th minute for our first serious effort at goal, PSV had already bagged a crucial away goal on a breakaway when Jeffersson Farfan robbed Gilberto and fired home from 18 yards.
The second half followed a similar pattern with PSV's massed ranks proving a tough nut to crack and then looking dangerous on the break while we forced late saves from Gomes in the visitors' goal.
"Of course I didn't like the result but we still have a second leg and when you lose by one goal it's not too bad," said Juande. "But we have to play much better next time.
"After this it's going to be very difficult and we are going to have to improve our performance in the second leg if we want to go through.
"They played better than us and as a team they are very good - they are first in the Dutch league with lots of points' advantage, and have come from the Champions League.
"We under-performed and I'm disappointed with that. PSV were the better team on the night and we have to accept this result.
"However, I don't think the scoreline is that bad - we just have to play better in the second leg."
