The departure of Jacques Santini saw Martin step up to Head Coach, with the long-serving Chris becoming first assistant. The Dutchman insists that having a man so steeped in the club tradition and culture alongside him, plus someone who knows English football inside-out, is vital to a successful coaching structure.
"It is always very important to have someone like Chris helping you," explained Martin. "He has been an unbelievable help to me and I never had any doubt at all that Chris was the right man.
"We are all friends here and it is all about having a good atmosphere. Chris is a terrific lad, homegrown people can be underestimated but I don't underestimate Chris.
"He is helping me in training, helping me before games, inspiring the lads and preparing as much as I do. I also have Clive Allen helping out and he is also doing a terrific job.
"I can only be pleased with them both."
Martin Jol has praised the contribution of his right-hand man Chris Hughton since the pair teamed up in early November.
