JOL SEEKS REPEAT

Martin Jol is looking for a repeat of last season by firing an opening-day salvo in the Premiership at Bolton on Saturday.

Martin Jol is looking for a repeat of last season by firing an opening-day salvo in the Premiership at Bolton on Saturday.

Our curtain-raiser last term took us to Portsmouth's Fratton Park where an own goal and poacher's strike from Jermain Defoe saw us claim maximum points.

That set us on the way to just one defeat in our opening 11 matches in the Premiership.

Players and management alike have talked about the confidence boost that win handed everyone and it's a case of ‘same again, please' at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday, kick-off 5.15pm.

“If we do well it sets us up,” said boss Martin. “The second game is against Sheffield United, they will want to do well but it's a home game for us and we want to win our home games.

“Everyone knows Portsmouth are very hard to beat at Fratton Park and we managed that last year and hopefully we'll do the same against Bolton, but it won't be easy.

“There is a big build up, tension, six weeks of pre-season and we won most of our friendlies again but the first match is the most important. You have to get a result and if you can, it's a great feeling.”
