Martin Jol was delighted with what he saw as a fine team performance as we closed out 2005 with a 2-0 victory against Newcastle at the Lane.

Teemu Tainio opened his goalscoring account for us with a fine volley just before the break and there was only one team in it in the second half as Mido made it 2-0 after 66 minutes. Mido later struck the post and numerous other chances were created without adding to the scoreline.

"I don't think you pick one player out," said Head Coach Martin. "I thought Paul Stalteri was good, Edgar Davids has played three games in five days and he's 32 and played well, Jermaine Jenas had his best game.

Michael Carrick always takes the initiative in midfield, Mido worked hard - it was a team effort and that was the main thing

"It was a good way to recover from our defeat at West Brom. We were a bit worried as Newcastle hadn't played on the Wednesday and we were playing our third match in a week but we looked fine.

"When Owen starts Newcastle always seem to win, even away, but we worked hard and played as a team. I was very pleased."

The win meant we completed 2005 with just two defeats at home - both to Chelsea. Our total home record in all competitions in the year was 16 wins, five draws and two defeats in 23 games.
