It was a spectacular effort as well - picking up the ball on halfway, leaving Stephane Henchoz in his wake, cutting past Arjan De Zeeuw and drilling the ball past Martin Pollitt - to put us 2-0 up at the JJB Stadium.

Robbie Keane handed us an early lead and Lee McCulloch’s effort from close range was too little, too late for Wigan as we ran out 2-1 winners.

He has great stamina. When you think he is tired he always comes up with that sort of thing, I’ve always known that about him

Head Coach Martin beamed: “If you are 32 and have played all over Europe, won all the silverware possible and you are still so happy to score a goal for your club - that is what you want.

“He wants to win, he wanted to come to this club, he loves this club and when he scored that goal he was as happy as a young kid scoring his first goal. That is what you want."
