Martin Jol believes the winning mentality possessed by Edgar Davids will add a vital ingredient to our mix for the new season.
The recruit from Inter Milan has always operated at the elite end of the game and has enjoyed great success at a career that has spanned Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus and a six-month stint at Barcelona.
Martin acknowledges the progress made and promise displayed by our young group last term, but hinted that a bite and winning know-how was perhaps missing on occasions away from home. He suspects the addition of Davids to his options could well make the difference.
"We did well at home but in some games we lacked the winning mentality or physical presence," reasoned the Head Coach. "I was talking about one player all the time and I meant Edgar Davids.
"He's not a type of player like Paul Gascoigne or Johan Cruyff but he's a team player with all the qualities you need. His distribution is great, his fitness levels are second to none and we wanted someone like him because apart from Naybet or Mendes at Porto the other players lacked the experience of winning things and he can give us a big boost."
Meanwhile, Martin dismissed the suggestion that Davids would take over the captain's armband from Ledley King.
"We have a Club captain in Ledley King and it will stay like that but Edgar Davids will lead by example. We are very satisfied with Ledley and I don’t think Edgar is someone who wants to be on the big stage and be captain, he wants to be a team player.
"It's always a big thing when someone like Edgar wants to play for your team. We all know it, potentially, Spurs is one of the big four or five clubs in England.
