Jol calls for control

Posted on 13 May 2005  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Martin Jol says the team must go about their work against Blackburn Rovers in a controlled fashion on Sunday.

It is well documented that goals are the order of the day against Mark Hughes' side to retain our chance of snatching 7th place, with Manchester City and Middlesbrough also competing for a European spot. We need City to win by not too big and margin and for us to better it by two goals.

However, the Head Coach knows that should the team adopt an all-out attacking stance from the off then the risk of conceding early - like at Middlesbrough - can only be increased.

"We told the players to go out in a controlled way against Middlesbrough because we knew they would invite us to play and try to catch us on the break," explained Martin. "We still have a lot of players who want to go forward and that was the main thing this year - we wanted to play attacking football.

"When you look at some of our wins away from home - Newcastle, Blackburn and Manchester City - we did it in a controlled way. That is what you need and at home it is a different story because the opposition try and play in a controlled way.

"Then you have to pressurise them all over the pitch and that is what we do at home."

Three times the team have registered five goals in home games this season, proving they are capable of accumulating a big scoreline when required. Martin acknowledged this fact but reasoned that the team need to be stronger in the games that really count towards achieving something.

"That is true - at home we are a different team," he added. "If you look at our record we have had some good away matches as well and have a good defensive record. But, in crucial matches, you have to be a bit more clever and be composed.

"We are a young team with having six players out with some experience. It is not an excuse because the team that played against Middlesbrough might have started anyway because we had a good team out. If it is 0-0 though and you open up you are not showing experience.

"We lack a bit of the physical touch and now and again I have the feeling we are not physical enough. The balance must be right.

"We need everything and there are four departments. You have a tactical side, a technical side, a physical side and a mental side. Chelsea, for example, is top in those four departments and we aren't yet. That is what we have to work on and then look at the balance.

"That is what you need to win things and go places."
