Joe Jordan insists we’ll give Wigan ‘the utmost respect’ as we prepare for Saturday’s trip to the DW Stadium.
As first-team coach Joe is quick to point out, the Latics remain the only team to take maximum points from us at the Lane in 14 Premier League matches this season.
Roberto Martinez’s team beat Birmingham City last time out but remain bottom of the Premier League going into this weekend.
It’s an incredible table though – Wigan are just three points from Blackburn in 13th and there is only seven points between Wigan in 20th and Stoke City in 10th.
“If you look at the games we’ve played at home we’ve maybe drawn one or two where we could have turned one point into three, but Wigan actually took the three points from us and they are the only team to come to White Hart Lane and do that,” said Joe.
“So they will get the utmost respect. Everyone knows the importance of the game. We are all enjoying the Champions League and we’d love to be back in there next season but we’ve got to earn it.”
Joe admits only taking two points from the last two games against Wolves and West Ham ‘niggles a bit’.
“Everyone realises that if we’re going to get the same sort of season next season then we’ve got to get into fourth spot,” he said. “It’s there and up for grabs.
“We’ve slipped in the last couple of games and frustratingly, we’ve been left scratching our heads because we’ve played really well. We should have won the games (against Wolves and West Ham) but we didn’t, so that niggles you a bit.
“We’re going to Wigan knowing, at this stage, wherever you are in the league, that you can’t slip-up.
“The games are ticking over and the opportunities to pick up again when you do slip-up are few now.”
