There were plenty of positives for the boss not least the friendly victories against Bordeaux (runners-up in Ligue 1 last season, in Champions League), Nice (eighth in Ligue 1, French League Cup runners-up) and Celta Vigo (sixth in La Liga, just missed out on Champions League).
Martin reflected: “Celta Vigo is normally a very good team and only just missed out on the Champions League in Spain.
“Bordeaux are in the Champions League, Nice did well and we’ve had some good tests with two French teams and a Spanish team.
“Our internationals were not there so everyone had the chance to do well and against Celta Vigo especially we had to use all the players.
“They used a lot as well, so that helped us a bit and we mixed it up rather than just play with the best team in the first half, for instance.
“We trained hard after the matches and perhaps the hardest sessions were after the first two games. You could perhaps see that against Celta Vigo but you have to do that. The lads wanted to win the last game and it showed.
“Last season was very similar at the Peace Cup in South Korea and overall I have to say I’m very satisfied.â€Â
Three wins out of three, eight days of hard work - no wonder Martin Jol wore a satisfied smile as the squad returned from our training camp in France.
