TUESDAY, JULY 7
Four more players returned on Monday - Andros, Nabil, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kevin Wimmer - and we used the day to test them and then train in the afternoon. At the moment they are still on their individual programmes but we expect them to join in with the main group tomorrow because they are at good fitness levels.
We had a double session on Monday and single session today. The length of the training session depends whether it’s on or off the pitch, but you cannot train for more than 90 minutes at a high level. We try to combine indoor and outdoor work. So far, the players are coping well with everything we are doing.
We are in the gymnasium before every session and for an hour this morning. People associate gym work with heavy loads and boring training but we have a very enjoyable philosophy – although it’s hard work as well!
We change the exercises daily and they are all related to patterns of movements. These are short, high-intensity exercises including a lot of decision making and reaction exercises. We focus on lower limbs but it’s important to keep the upper limbs and core very strong.
The players know the benefits of this type of work and we are very pleased because we’re training at an even higher intensity than last season.
Below: Jesus and Mauricio keep a close eye on Tuesday's session
We are still in the first phase of pre-season so we are increasing the volume of training, increasing competition in terms of positional, possession and small-sided games and we are very pleased with how the players are absorbing their workloads.
Look out for more from Jesus later this week...
