SUNDAY, JULY 5
The first players to return from their summer breaks were back for medical testing on Friday. Every player had an off-season programme and specific targets to enable them all to start the new season in the best physical condition. On Friday, we reviewed everything medical and fitness-wise and we were very happy with the way they all came back.
On Saturday, we began physical and technical training. That started with a power session in the gym to re-enforce all the muscles to avoid any surprises in the first sessions. In the afternoon, we were straight into technical and tactical work.

We believe we need to break down specific situations from matches in training sessions so everything we try to do is related to the game.
We had one session today (Sunday, July 5). Our dynamic is to train twice and then have one session the day after, to allow the players to recover and to be ready for the next double session. Sunday was a mix of power and technical work.
It has been a short break this summer. Sometimes that is good, as it doesn’t allow the players to drop their levels too much, but it does seem unbelievable that in just under a month’s time, we will be playing such a huge game at Old Trafford!
Pre-season provides the basis of a player’s year, in terms of performance, spirit around the team and it’s massive for coaches to get three or four weeks clear to work properly and for players to improve day by day without problems. It is vital for us to set the values, not just fitness-wise, but also the technical and tactical philosophy around the team.
Look out for more from Jesus next week...
