Jermain Defoe says we have to be ‘ruthless’ against Everton on Wednesday night.

One goal has made the difference in our last two home matches in the Premier League against Sunderland and West Brom, both tough encounters against stubborn opposition that ended with hard-fought 1-0 wins.

Everton will no doubt provide a similar test as we look to stretch our current run of just one defeat in 17 league matches.

“It all stems from the manager, he gets them working hard,” said Jermain, who hit the winner against West Brom and followed up with his 11th of the season against Cheltenham in the FA Cup on Saturday.

“That’s the first thing you bring to the game and if your work-rate is good, the rest of it takes care of itself, the football side of it.

“It’s always tough against Everton but we’re full of confidence and we have to try and keep doing what we’re doing.

“We’re at home, we’re playing well and we have to be ruthless.”
