JD's friendly fire

Jermain Defoe quickly underlined two dates in our pre-season diary.

Our second pre-season friendly against AFC Bournemouth on July 17 immediately struck a chord with the striker and his eyebrows were raised again when he found out our first opponents in the Barclays Asia Trophy - West Ham!

Both are of course JD's former clubs.

"Bournemouth will be special for me," he said. "I scored lots of goals there and it was a fantastic experience for me at that age."

Jermain had just turned 18 when he went on loan to the Cherries from West Ham in the 2000-01 season. He scored 18 goals in 32 appearances including a run of scoring 10 goals in 10 successive matches in League One.

"I loved my time there and it will be great to go back," he added.

We face West Ham in our opening match of the Barclays Asia Trophy in China on July 29 before playing either Hull City or Beijing Gouan on July 31.

"China will be a good trip, playing West Ham and perhaps Hull as well," said JD. "It gets you prepared for the season and we want to get a winning mentality, including friendlies. I've always felt better when I've had a good pre-season."
