Jermain Defoe describes Sunday’s clash against Sunderland as a ‘must-win’ game.

The striker is determined to bounce back from last week’s loss at Stoke, our first defeat in the Premier League since August.

In that time we put together a run of 10 wins in 11 unbeaten Premier League games, matching our best unbeaten run from 1995 and including a record run of six wins on the trot in the competition.

That all ended at the Britannia Stadium and ‘JD’ is now aiming to kick-start another run when Martin O’Neill’s men come to the Lane for a 3pm kick-off.

“We want to bounce back,” said Jermain, who grabbed his 110th goal for the club in Thursday night’s 4-0 Europa League win at Shamrock Rovers.

“It’s important to win that game and keep getting points. We’re at home, we’re creating a lot of chances and hopefully we can win.

“I see it as a must-win game, to be honest, to stay up there in that top four.”

Jermain said he expected Sunderland to be full of confidence after their late show turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win against Blackburn.

“A new manager comes in, everyone is fighting for a place, everyone wants to impress and as soon as he walks through the door, he lifts the players and the crowd,” he said. “They will come to the Lane firing after last week’s win.”
