Our versatile Belgian defender enjoyed a solid outing as we saw off FC Sheriff 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night, heading home our opening goal in the first half.
Jermain Defoe fired in our second after the break as we registered our second 2-0 win in the space of four days, following on from last Sunday’s victory at Aston Villa in the Premier League.
And Jan is hungry for another three-points haul this weekend, as we return to domestic action looking for our first win in three home games.
“Hull have done well this season,” he said. “They’ve played well and won a few difficult games.
“It’s important for us to keep our run going, especially at home. We have to win to stay up there. Let’s hope we win our game and other teams drop points this weekend.”
Reflecting on Thursday night’s triumph – our third win out of three in Group K of the Europa League – the 26-year-old added: “It was nice because I haven’t scored this season, so it’s good to have my first goal.
“Of course, the win is most important. It’s the best team we’ve played so far this season in the Europa League, so it’s a good result for us.
“It wasn’t our best game but we kept a clean sheet and we won a difficult away game, so we can be happy.”
We are still yet to concede a goal in the present Europa League campaign following Thursday night’s result – and our defensive record in the Premier League makes for impressive viewing as well.
We’ve now kept 11 clean sheets in the 14 games we’ve played so far this season in all competitions, and Jan insists no one individual can take the credit for such effective rearguard work.
“We defend as a team and it’s great to have clean sheets for the confidence of the defenders and the goalkeeper,” he said.
“The midfield and strikers give us a lot of pressing and we do well as a team.
“Most of the defenders are the same as last season, we’ve adapted to each other and everyone does his job and that’s important in the Premier League.”
