Sunday’s 5-1 victory over the Cherries made it nine games without defeat on the domestic scene this term, with only Manchester United having got the better of us on the opening day of the season.
Jan, who has been ever-present alongside Belgian compatriot Toby Alderweireld at centre-back during that run, said the players always had the belief that we’d emerge victorious from our trip to the south coast – even after going 1-0 down inside the first minute.
And he believes that positive mentality can help us prolong our form into the coming weeks.
“We’re nine games unbeaten in the league and we want to continue,” he said.
“We felt strong at the back again during the match, apart from the goal at the start. It was important we didn’t concede a second before half-time as that could have brought them back into the game.
“It was a complete performance – we scored five times, at the back we were solid and helped each other out. We feel like a team out there and that’s a good thing going forward.”
Harry Kane grabbed the headlines on Sunday after rattling in a hat-trick, while Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela were also on the scoresheet.
It could have been a different story, though, with Bournemouth taking the lead less than a minute into the game through Matt Ritchie.
Jan admitted the fact that the hosts scored so early might actually have worked in our favour rather than theirs.
“It was a goal that could happen in the first minute, the 50th or the last minute,” he said. “It was a difficult cross to defend and a good finish.
“Perhaps it was better to concede that early rather than just before half-time or at the end of the game. We felt strong from the start and I felt all along we were the better team.
“Maybe because of that goal Bournemouth didn’t know whether to push more or defend the 1-0 lead. It looked like a wake-up call for us but in my opinion, we were stronger.
“We knew they would try to press us high up the pitch and we said we’d try to stay calm on the ball, don’t go long and try to find the space.
“We found the right players in the right positions and that gave us the opportunities.”
