Jamie's peach of a season

Posted on 9 June 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Jamie Slabber can pinpoint the moment his Spurs career went into overdrive.

Turn the clock back to March 10 and a chilly night at Aldershot's Recreation Ground and the young striker bagged his first reserve goal against Chelsea, racing onto a pass before finishing smartly.

"That's where it all started really," said Jamie, reflecting on a season to remember at Spurs Lodge.

"I played quite well that night, scored and trained with the first team after that. That gave me a lot of confidence. It was a massive boost."

Six days later and the 18-year-old was thrust into the limelight. He was named by Glenn Hoddle in his squad for the Premiership clash against Liverpool, made the bench, came on as substitute and created a goal for Teddy Sheringham with just about his first touch. A star was born.

"I was training with the first team and the manager mentioned I could be in the squad," he recalled. "The next day I looked in the paper and my name was in there!

"I remember the game. I was nervous warming up and it would have been great to have got on earlier.

"I went on and I was up against Sami Hyypia. That bloke is massive! But I got on with it and it went okay. It made me hungry for more."

He'd soon doubled his reserve tally with one of the best goals scored at that level all season, an exquisite chip into the top corner at Leicester City's Walkers Stadium - a goal well worthy of its surroundings.

Unfortunately, the highs of Jamie's magnificent March were replaced towards the end of the season by an ankle injury.

"It had been bothering me for a while and the staff thought it would be better to leave it and allow it to heal," he said. "It felt a lot better at the end of last season and I can't wait to get going again next season.

"I feel the fittest I've felt for a long time and I can't wait for pre-season. Fingers crossed I'll get a chance."
