Their central midfield axis looked solid and Steffen's expertise in the deeper role certainly allowed Jamie to bomb forward - as he did with great effect to grab the winner in the last minute.
Reflecting on the pairing, Jamie said: "It was good and I enjoyed it. Steffen works so hard, wins a lot of tackles and he forces you into making tackles as well, which is good.
"I thought we looked quite solid.
"He is a good talker and a good player. He's won the top medals and has played in the big games - he knows the game inside out."
Jamie was also through on goal before striking the winner but his intentions on that occasion were read by goalkeeper Brad Friedel.
He has an excuse though. "Yeah, I know," he laughed when he was reminded of the one-on-one chance that got away. "I didn't really have anything in my mind of what I was going to do really.
"I was a bit surprised to find myself through and didn't realise how much time I had.
"But I haven't been through on goal like that for about two and a half years - that's my excuse anyway!"
Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for Steffen Freund after the pair's first outing together at Blackburn on Sunday.
