Jamie Redknapp has welcomed the introduction of even more midfield competition following the arrival of Michael Carrick from West Ham.
Middlemen Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes, Thimothee Atouba and now Carrick have strengthened the central area so far, with Swiss under-21 international Reto Ziegler set to arrive in January. Add the hopefully swift return of Simon Davies to the squad and, along with Jamie, Michael Brown, Johnnie Jackson, Dean Marney and Rohan Ricketts - Jacques Santini should not go short of midfield options.
"There is a lot of competition for places now in midfield - there really is," reflected Jamie, who has operated on the right side in the opening three games of the season. "We have good midfielders and have Simon Davies to come back in too.
"The club is looking in good nick, good shape, and I like the way the club is growing at the moment."
And what about Carrick? Jamie suspects we have a young player who will be determined to re-establish himself as a Premiership performer.
"I love him as a player, Michael is a good footballer. He'll be excited about the challenge of coming here because I think he went a bit stale at West Ham.
"All he would have seen was the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Jermain and Fredi leaving and it must have been a bit deflating. He was the last out of the bunch my dad bought through to leave and I think he will really want to show something now he is with us."
