Both were substituted during the midweek 1-1 draw at West Brom with Defoe more a precaution having played so many games of late. Atouba is having treatment on a knee injury.
Meanwhile, new signing Michael Carrick trained with the senior squad for the first time this afternoon along with fit-again Robbie Keane.
“I was pleased with our performance at West Brom but now need to assess the general fitness of the squad ahead on what is a very important game for us against Birmingham” said Jacques.
“If we get a good result against City then it will confirm our positive start to the new season. We must win but it will be very difficult because Birmingham are a good team.
“I have been impressed by the team spirit shown in recent performances, with good results achieved in difficult circumstances because this is a new team that has not worked together as often as it needs to.
“But Saturday is very important for the team and for the fans because a good result would set us up for September which will be a difficult month with the Oldham cup game in between Chelsea and Manchester United. If we can make it eight points from our first four games then that will set us up nicely as we go into the international break.”
Coach Jacques Santini awaits fitness reports on Jermain Defoe and Thimothee Atouba ahead of Saturday’s game with Birmingham City at White Hart Lane.
