Fredi Kanoute opened the scoring after 37 minutes of a tight first half, Robbie made it 2-0 after the break, Jermain Defoe soon added a third and then an amazing last five minutes saw Goran Bunjevcevic grab his first for the club, Anthony Gardner volley home only his second goal for us and Fredi double his tally to complete the half-dozen.
"The second goal from Robbie Keane was very important for this game," reasoned Jacques at Boundary Park.
"We knew before the game that we had a good chance to win it and although we had a good first half, we didn't have many chances.
"I don't forget the first half because Oldham played well. One goal would have been a good result but once Robbie scored the second goal it was very easy for us.
"In the cup when you score two or three goals you know the opponents think it's not possible to win the game and it doesn't matter then if you lose three, four or five goals.
"We were patient and it was an important result for my players and our fans."
Jacques Santini conceded that last night's 6-0 Carling Cup win at Oldham was very much in the balance until Robbie Keane struck just after the hour.
