“If I could be fit for the season that would do me,” declared our Norwegian hitman. “I know then that if the team plays well and I play well the goals will follow.”
After successive seasons as our top goalscorer, Steffen suffered a nightmare, injury-hit campaign last time around.
Successive knee operations kept him out from September until March and when he returned, two bad bouts of concussion ended his season.
But those problems are a thing of the past, he has looked sharp in pre-season and netted again in Wednesday’s win at Portsmouth.
He said: “Last season was very frustrating but actually the first year I was here was the worst because I was out for a whole season.
“I’ve got used to what it is like to be injured so it is not as bad as it used to be.
“We would all like to be back as quickly as possible but sometimes it takes time and you have to be patient.
“The worst part when you come back from injuries is almost being afraid of injury again, you don’t play like your normal self and your game gets worse. But I feel great now and I don’t feel afraid of anything!”
Forget goals, Steffen Iversen has another target for next season — to stay out of the treatment room.
