Our Norwegian hitman's 2001-02 season followed a similar, frustrating path to his previous campaigns at the Lane after a leg injury ruled him out for four months early on and a groin problem in March kept him out for another four weeks.
Even more frustrating for the 25-year-old is that when he's started, things have gone well - he managed six goals from 14 starts.
Now on his summer break having earned his 21st Norway cap in the 1-1 draw against Iceland on Wednesday, Steffen is determined to hit the ground running in pre-season.
He said: "I've played quite a few games at the end of the season and you can see the goals are coming.
"Strikers get chances in this team, I probably could have scored a few more but I'm sure that will come if I can play throughout a season.
"I just want to take that step and if I do, I know I can score goals.
"I've been injured for long periods ever since I've been here and I haven't really played the way I know I can play and that's because of all the injuries.
"Now it's up to me to try and prevent them as much as I can, get fit in pre-season and at the start of next season hopefully I'll stay fit for the full season."
