Iversen: Don't panic!

Posted on 25 September 2000  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

Steffen Iversen refuses to panic about a current lack of goals on both team and personal fronts.

We've fired blanks in our last three games against Charlton, Brentford and Manchester City on Saturday despite dominating and creating bags of chances in all three.

A combination of poor finishing and heroic goalkeeping has kept us out but Iversen is confident it will come right sooner rather than later.

The Norwegian star said: "We've created a lot of chances in the last three games but we've got two draws and lost against Charlton. For me that's unbelievable.

"At Charlton we lost 1-0 but I think we should have won two or three-one at least and Brentford was the same, they didn't create hardly any chances but we created a lot. I don't know what it is. The ball just doesn't want to go in the back of the net.

"But the team spirit is so good at the moment. You can see that. We are fighting to the end and trying everything to score but at the moment it just won't happen for us.

"It would be worse if we weren't creating chances though. If that was the case you would start worrying. All we can do is continue playing the way we are playing and hopefully the goals will come."

The theory is the same personally for Iversen. Top-scorer for the last two seasons, he is yet to open his account eight games into this campaign.

He added: "It does get a bit frustrating but not too much because I am playing in a bit deeper position at the moment, more like midfield, and I'm defending as much as I'm attacking.

"It is a little different for me but I don't mind who gets the goals as long as we keep playing well. I feel I'm playing well myself but not getting the goals. Hopefully that will change soon."
