The midfielder found the top corner from 22 yards just before the break after the home side had taken the lead in an impressive first half display.
Sherwood and Steffen Iversen both came through 58 minutes of action on a freezing night at Broadhall Way. Alton Thelwell and John Piercy were the only other first team squad regulars to feature as we fielded a young side.
Iversen was in the action in the first minute but appeared caught between a shot and a cross while a few minutes later Yannick Kamanan headed Ciaran Toner's cross straight at Paul Wilkerson in the home goal.
But the home side took the lead with 10 minutes on the clock. Paul Wormull's pass split the defence and DJ Campbell made no mistake one-on-one against Gavin Kelly.
The Nationwide Conference outfit were lifted by that goal and enjoyed a purple patch midway through the half.
Wormull, recently signed from Rushden & Diamonds, inspired most things in that period. He turned Kamanan to force a save out of Kelly after 26 minutes, sent Kirk Jackson through one-on-one a minute later only for Kelly to block with his feet and the youngster was up to the challenge again after 34 minutes when Wormull's cross found Williams at the far post.
In-between our best move of the half saw Kamanan cut inside from the left flank and find George Snee, he fed the overlapping Piercy whose cross was met by Kamanan but kept out by the combination of Wilkerson and his upright.
Sherwood's equaliser then followed with 42 minutes on the clock, curling into the top left from the right-hand side of the area after Sam Sodje had climbed all over Iversen.
Wormull still had the chance for the final word of the half but his finishing didn't match his fine approach play and he dinked a one-on-one chance wide.
The home side made three changes at half-time as the second half proved a stop-start affair with substitutes regularly entering the fray.
Jack Midson volleyed just wide and Williams clipped the crossbar with a header while at the other end Steve Fergsuon latched onto Jamie Slabber's pass only for Wilkerson to smoother his effort.
Piercy provided the moment of the half with a run that started in his own area and ended with a 20-yard effort just wide and Slabber saw the final chance of an entertaining encounter saved on the line by Wilkerson's legs.
