The initiative has so far established over 90 similar centres in football clubs around the country. The main aim of the centres is to provide after-school study support facilities to boost literacy, numeracy and ICT using football as the motivating factor.
The Study Support Centre at Tottenham Hotspur has been open since September 2001 and so far over 1,000 Haringey students from 11 local schools have benefited from our daytime and evening programmes.
The centre is funded through central government, Haringey LEA and Tottenham Hotspur FC and the club provide us with our centre inside White Hart Lane.
We have a state of the art ICT suite complete with interactive whiteboard purchased with a grant from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
In addition to our mainstream activities, the students tour the ground, visit the shop and, thanks to tickets donated by the club, most students have been able to attend a Premiership match as part of the programme.
At the end of the course, students are invited back to the club with their parents and teachers for a celebration afternoon. A first-team player presents awards and prizes at these events.
