Today, we give you a few facts on Stoke City...

- It is rumoured that one of Stoke's first recorded matches, a 1-0 defeat to Whitchurch in December 1870, was played using a rugby ball!

- Financial difficulties in the late 1800s led to player-secretary William Rowley transferring himself to Leicester Fosse and agreeing his own signing-on fee!

- Stoke re-signed the great Stanley Matthews as a 46-year-old in 1961, 14 years after he had left for Blackpool, and his £3,000 transfer fee was wiped out by gate receipts alone for his return match against Huddersfield.

- The club's mascot, Pottermus, is a motorcycle-riding hippo who has a girlfriend called Pottermiss!
