Eric Dier starred in midfield while Kyle Walker operated at right wing-back and Dele Alli was deployed as part of a front three as Gareth Southgate’s men controlled the friendly game for large spells in Dortmund.
Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied Dele one-on-one shortly before half-time and then saved Eric’s angled shot moments after the restart in two of England’s best chances on the night, but there was to be no repeat of the 3-2 victory England enjoyed in Germany just under a year ago when Eric famously scored a stoppage-time winner, as a long-range rocket from Lukas Podolski, marking his final outing for Germany, against the run of play won it for the hosts in the 69th minute.
Both Eric and Kyle completed the full match, while Dele was replaced by Jesse Lingard with 19 minutes left.
Elsewhere, Marcus Edwards and goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman were unused substitutes for England Under-19s as they made a winning start to their European Championship elite round qualifiers with a 3-0 victory over Norway at St George’s Park earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, defender Japhet Tanganga played 87 minutes and attacking midfielder Samuel Shashoua came on as a 77th-minute substitute for England Under-18s as they registered a 2-0 friendly win over Saudi Arabia in Qatar.
