A spot kick was given and up stepped Lorenzo Insigne to level the match at 1-1.
Eric started the game in holding midfield but ended it at centre-back, while Kieran Trippier earned another start at right wing-back before being replaced by Danny Rose on the hour. Dele Alli was an unused substitute.
Across London, centre-back Davinson Sanchez was an unused substitute for Colombia as they were held to a goalless draw by Australia at Fulham’s Craven Cottage.
On the continent, Heung-Min Son was part of the South Korea side that staged a late fightback in Poland – only to concede in stoppage time and suffer a 3-2 defeat. The hosts had led 2-0 since the end of the first half but two goals in three minutes near the end of the 90 minutes – the first one assisted by Sonny – saw South Korea draw level before all their hard work was undone.

Serge Aurier enjoyed a happier time with Ivory Coast, the right-back completing the full game as his nation beat Moldova 2-1 in France, while there was also a victory for our Belgian trio of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele. Both defenders put in a full shift to help the Red Devils secure a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Brussels, with midfielder Mousa coming on for the last six minutes.
Earlier, France goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris played 90 minutes as Les Bleus registered a 3-1 victory over World Cup hosts Russia in Saint Petersburg while Christian Eriksen played the first 64 minutes of Denmark’s goalless home draw with Chile.
In other international action, on-loan midfielder Josh Onomah completed the whole game while Kyle Walker-Peters was on the bench as England Under-21s opened up a five-point lead at the top of their European Under-21 Championship qualifying group with a late 2-1 win over Ukraine at Bramall Lane. Development Squad midfielder Jack Roles was an unused substitute for Cyprus Under-21s as they suffered a 1-0 stoppage-time defeat at home to Sweden in qualifying for the same tournament.
Another young player currently out on loan, Marcus Edwards, was substituted midway through the second half as England Under-20s beat Portugal 3-0 at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium while centre-half Japhet Tanganga was on the bench as England Under-19s lost their final European Under-19 Championship elite round qualifier 2-0 to hosts Macedonia. The result was academic as the Young Lions had already cemented top spot in their group.
Young Academy striker Troy Parrot scored a penalty eight minutes into the second half to give Republic of Ireland Under-17s a 1-0 victory over Poland which saw his nation top their group in European Under-17 Championship elite round qualifying. Troy started the game and was replaced 12 minutes from time.
On Monday, Ben Davies was substituted in stoppage time as Wales lost 1-0 to Uruguay in China, in the final of the friendly ‘China Cup’ tournament. And at St George’s Park, defender TJ Eyoma played the full game with midfielder Oliver Skipp coming on for the last 10 minutes of England Under-18s’ 2-1 victory over Belarus at St George’s Park.
