It was not a good night for our players on England or Republic of Ireland international duty.
Paul Robinson was in goal for England in the shock 1-0 defeat to Northern Ireland in Belfast. There was little Robbo could do about David Healy's 74th minute strike that settled the contest, nor Jermain Defoe who was introduced two minutes later into an England side lacking any cohesion.
Over at Lansdowne Road, Thierry Henry's goal midway through the second half determined the winners of the the Republic's eagerly awaited encounter with the French. Robbie Keane and Andy Reid played the whole game with Reid striking the post in the first half.
The Republic now sit fourth in the Group Four standings with two games remaining.
Grzegorz Rasiak will have more enjoyed his night's work as Poland ran out 1-0 winners over Wales in Group Six and now lead England by five points. Our new striker featured for 65 minutes, with Zurawski netting the winner from the penalty spot 12 minutes earlier.
Finland - with Teemu Tainio featuring for 82 minutes - restored some pride after the goalless draw with Andorra last time out with a 5-1 win over Macedonia.
