Inter next in Europa League

Posted on 22 February 2013  - 02:42

Thursday night's thrilling climax to secure a 1-1 draw at Lyon and 3-2 aggregate win means we will now face Inter Milan in the Round of 16 of the Europa League.

Inter next in Europa League

Mousa Dembele struck a wonder goal in the final minute at the Stade de Gerland to clinch a 1-1 draw on the night and 3-2 aggregate win against the Ligue 1 title-chasers.

The draw for the Round of 16 had already been made by UEFA and we knew if we progressed that we'd take on either Inter, currently fifth in Serie A, or Romanian champions CFR Cluj.

Inter won the first leg 2-0 at the San Siro and booked a comfortable passage through to the Round of 16 with a 3-0 win in Romania on Thursday night with Fredy Gaurin (2) and Marco Benassi on target.

The tie is bound to have fans thinking back to our memorable clashes in the group stage of the Champions League in 2010-11.

Inter won the Champions League against Bayern Munich in May, 2010 and we took on the reigning champions at the San Siro in October, the night we came from 4-0 down to narrowly lose 4-3 with 10 men - and Gareth Bale announced his arrival on the world stage with a hat-trick.

The Welsh flier was arguably even better in the return match at the Lane in November as we celebrated a 3-1 win on a glory, glory night with goals from Rafa van der Vaart, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko.

We qualified with Inter for the Round of 16, where we beat their Milan rivals AC over two legs, thanks to a famous 1-0 win at the San Siro.

Inter also impressed by beating Bayern Munich before we both lost out in the quarter-finals - Real Madrid did the damage at the Bernabeu while Inter lost heavily against Schalke.

Now we meet again in the last 16 of the Europa League.

The first leg will be at White Hart Lane on Thursday, March 7 with the return a week later at the San Siro on Thursday, March 14.
