4 - Glory, Glory - Smith & Jones

Cliff Jones and Bobby Smith were always good friends off the pitch as well as on it, so getting them together to reminisce about Bill Nicholson, the Double and those Glory, Glory Nights in Europe was a labour of love for all involved. As the current squad continue their progress in the UEFA Cup, here’s a taste of the legendary pair’s memories of playing in Europe….

Smith: “The European nights were really great. Under the floodlights, the fans were really keyed up. They were a terrific crowd. When you went out they made you feel like you wanted to play for them.”

Jones: “They were called the ‘Glory, Glory Nights’ and they really were the glory nights, weren’t they Bob? We used to wear the all-white strip, which we loved, and the floodlights were on...the crowd would really lift you. No European club wanted to play Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane because of the crowd.”

Smith & Jones are featured in conversation over four pages in the ‘Glory, Glory’ section of the Opus.

With 300,000 words and 1,500 photographs, the Opus is the ultimate piece of Tottenham Hotspur memorabilia.
