12 – Support – Terrace Heroes – Steffen Freund

Over the years, certain players have captured the affections of supporters for the sheer pride they’ve shown when wearing the Tottenham Hotspur shirt. Members of this select band spoke to the Opus about a very special relationship…

Steffen Freund...

"Having played at Euro ‘96 and soaked up the wonderful English passion for football, it was easy to sign for Spurs. I loved the mentality of our fans, who supported with the same honest heart that drives players like myself to achieve; those who wear the shirt with passion and a deep awareness of what it means to adorn the cockerel. Today, I recommend every player to experience the Premiership and its great atmosphere, fans, stadiums, and exemplary fairness – where the referees consistently let games flow like nowhere else I know.

"Even before joining Spurs, Juergen Klinsmann had endorsed my desire to sign for the club. As a competitive player it proved such a special place to be, especially the derby games, where the blue and white adrenaline coursed through my veins at speed.

"My attitude was to make things happen on the pitch, a fact not lost on the army of fans who have approached me since leaving. Their incredible appreciation is something that makes me exceedingly proud. Even when they were willing me to ‘’Shoooooot’’, it showed a basic honesty in them that I was a man of integrity, who would have laid down his life for that all-important goal."

Steffen Freund is featured alongside the likes of Tommy Harmer, Terry Dyson, Nayim and Tony Parks as part of ‘Terrace Heroes’ over four pages in the ‘Support’ section of the Opus.

With 300,000 words and 1,500 photographs, the Opus is the ultimate piece of Tottenham Hotspur memorabilia.
