Phil Ifil knows football is all about taking your chance - could his big chance arrive on Saturday?
The young defender, still just 17, has been named in the squad for the Premiership opener against Liverpool.
That squad is missing injured Anthony Gardner, Stephen Kelly, OJ Mabizela, Dean Richards, Robbie Keane, Simon Davies and Mauricio Taricco.
Right-back Phil has impressed new boss Jacques Santini in a handful of first-team appearances in pre-season.
The real thing could be just around the corner. "It's all about taking your chance," said Phil earlier in the week at Spurs Lodge.
"You never know when the next opportunity will come along so when one comes along, you have to take it. You have to do well, have to take that opportunity."
He did just that in friendlies in Sweden, Stevenage Borough, in the Kappa Cup in Seville and, last weekend, his first appearance at White Hart Lane for the friendly against Cagliari.
He added: "It's been a great experience - going to Sweden, going to Spain and now playing at White Hart Lane.
"I didn't think I was going to get on against Cagliari. I was on the sidelines and when Tano got injured, my name was called. I was thinking 'oh my....'
"It's the first time but as they say, there's a first time for everything.
"To play in front of the home fans for the first time, it was a great experience."
