The first team squad have completed an eight-game programme since returning in early July and heading off to a training camp in La Manga. The fixtures also included a trip to South Africa before the team tackled the two toughest assignments in PSV Eindhoven and Sporting Lisbon at the Lane.
"It is always a bit exhausting but, if it were any different to that, we would be asking why," reasoned Chris.
"What we have done is to build up the quality of our games over the pre-season period - with the last two games being our most difficult. That is how you want it ahead of a difficult campaign which starts on Saturday."
Chris added that he feels results have been decent over the course of the games and that the squad are in pretty good shape to cope with the threat presented by Birmingham City at the weekend.
"You always build towards that first game and your circumstances can vary. If I look at some teams in pre-season they will be very disappointed with the amount of games they've lost. Ours has gone quite well.
"From an injury point of view, we have a few players that won't start the season, which is unfortunate. What you've got to have is faith in the squad that is going to be there for that first game and build your game plan around that."
