Chris Hughton takes a look at Middlesbrough ahead of tonight's (September 26) Carling Cup third round tie at the Lane.MIDDLESBROUGH are a young, developing side with an enthusiastic manager in Gareth Southgate and along the road there will be ups and downs.

One thing they do have is an abundance of young talent and if you look at players coming through, they probably have more than most Premier League sides in the first team squad.

Whenever you play in this competition you can never be sure as to what will line-up against you. They have quality, generally play 4-4-2 and have good options down the left with Taylor at left-back and Stewart Downing, who scored a terrific goal against Sunderland on Saturday.

They’ve had a change down the right with Gary O’Neil, who they brought in from Portsmouth the summer but is cup-tied for this game. At right-back, someone we know very well in Luke Young, who we’ll always wish the best to.

Another product of their Academy system is David Wheater, a centre-back who has done well alongside Jonathan Woodgate, a good partnership and for Wheater, ideal to play alongside someone like Woodgate.

In midfield it’s been Julio Arca, who picked up a serious injury against Sunderland at the weekend, Fabio Rochemback and George Boateng with further options with the shape of Lee Cattermole.

Up front it’s been Tuncay, who was also injured at Sunderland and Mido, who had a hamstring injury at the weekend and they have injury problems up front, so I would expect Dong-Gook Lee to be involved.
