Trailing 2-1 with just over five minutes left, Goran Bunjevcevic volleyed home to take the game into extra time with his second goal in two Carling Cup ties this season - his only goals for the club!
We forged ahead in the first period of extra time with goals from Michael Brown and Jermain Defoe - his second of the night - only for Les Ferdinand to make it 4-3 almost immediately.
That set up a grandstand finish in the second period of extra time with us wasting chances to put the game beyond doubt, Kasey Keller saving superbly from Ferdinand and then holding firm as Bolton laid siege to our goal in the final seconds.
The win quickly avenged Saturday's 2-1 Premiership defeat against the same side and we now travel to Burnley in the last 16.
Coach Chris said: "We were aware this was going to be a difficult game irrespective of what team Sam (Allardyce) put out.
"You are looking for players to rise to the challenge and to get through in whichever fashion is very pleasing.
"We showed a lot of character to come back from being twice behind.
"The determination of the players, especially having to go through an extra 30 minutes, says a lot about them."
Chris Hughton was delighted with how we fought back to clinch victory in last night's amazing Carling Cup tie at Bolton.
