The Liverpool boss was impressed with our performance at Anfield after watching Michael Owen secure the three points late on for his table toppers.
"This team showed to me why they were third in the table," said Houllier. "They are well balanced and have good, experienced players.
"Jamie seems to be a different player, puts his foot in now, tackles, I'm pleased he is right.
"Poyet, Sheringham, Keane as well, they are a good offensive side. I was pleased we were able to contain them."
Houllier said he was particularly pleased his side were able to hit back after Dean Richards cancelled out Danny Murphy's outstanding opener.
He added: "The good thing is despite the young age, we are growing in maturity and mental strength. We didn't let our heads go down and kept going forward.
"Perhaps you could have thought after the win at Leeds and performance in Moscow, with the travelling and everything, they would have been happy with 1-1, but credit to the players.
"I saw that when Tottenham scored, they backed off and I thought if we kept going we might get something.
"I wanted to win. We have a squad that allows substitions to be decisive, they have an impact and Milan (Baros) and Vladi (Smicer) did that."
Gerard Houllier, while believing his side deserved to win, admitted: "Spurs showed why they were third."
