Danny Rose captained England U21 during the closing stages of Monday night’s friendly with Iceland at Deepdale, Preston.
The midfielder played 90 minutes of the 2-1 defeat – his 16th cap at this level – and was joined in the starting lineup by fellow Spur Kyle Naughton.
The night started well for Danny and the Young Lions as it was the Yorkshireman’s fine through-ball that released Nathan Delfouneso to open the scoring after 13 minutes.
But the visitors hit back with goals either side of half-time to give Stuart Pearce’s men their third defeat in four friendlies since qualifying for the summer’s European Championships.
However, it was a proud end to the night for Danny, who took on the skipper’s armband from Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand, who was substituted on 74 minutes.
